Louis Carbone Wins Hornet 50 ; Randy Culver Claims First E-Mod Victory at Holland

Buffalo, NY’s Louis Carbone was dominate, leading 44 circuits on his way to his second win of the 2015 season after winning the 50 lap main event for the Howdy’s Hornets on Local Edge, Eastern Hills Mall and Veterans One Stop Center of WNY Military and Family Appreciation Night at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on a picture perfect Saturday night. “The Rocket” Tommy Catalano from Ontario, NY won the main event for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds. Randy Culver from Northeast, Pennsylvania won the inaugural visit by the E-Mods. Josh Hathaway from Holland, NY earned his first career Seneca Niagara Casino Late Model feature event. Tom Northem from Alden, NY won the main event for the Bank of Holland Chargers. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY earned his second NYPA TQ Midget feature of the season. Jeremy Haudricourt from Bliss, NY won the INEX Legends main event. Nikki Maltby from West Seneca, NY won her first career event for the Future 4’s. Jason Adams from Glenwood, NY earned his second feature of the season in the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s.

The Howdy’s Hornets 50 was led to the green flag by Bob Bogner and Don Haskell with Haskell taking the lead on the opening circuit. Michele Maltby would battle with Bob Palmer for second with Timmy Catalano and Louis Carbone battling for the fourth spot early on. Palmer would go after Haskell with Palmer taking over the lead on lap three. Louis Carbone would move into third place and then go after the lead duo. Jeff Szafraniec passed Haskell to move into third with Timmy Catalano following Szafraniec around the speedway. Carbone, Palmer and Szafraniec went three wide for the lead with Carbone inching out in front on lap six. Catalano would pass Palmer to move into third on lap seven and began to go after Carbone and Szafraniec. The leaders would hit lap traffic by lap 15. Catalano and Szafraniec would battle for second and the same could be said for Ben Russo and George Anthony as they battled for fourth place for much of the event. Timmy Catalano’s strong run would come to an end as he hit the back stretch wall while running in third, causing the yellow flag to come out for the first time in the main event. The restart would see the leaders back together with Carbone, Szafraniec, Russo and Anthony going side by side for the top four spots. Carbone would pull away from Szafraniec to win the 50 lap special, his second win of the season.  

Alan Bookmiller and Pete Sisti shared the front row for the main event for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds main event with Bookmiller showing the way early. Jake Vernon would work his way to take over the lead by lap ten. Tommy Catalano would work his way through the field as he would take over second from Bookmiller by lap 12 to begin going after the leader Vernon. With Vernon out front, Catalano would begin to reel in the leader. By the races midway mark, Vernon and Catalano raced bumper to bumper with Opening Night feature winner Jimmy Zacharias in third being chased by Mike Fiebelkorn Jr and defending track champion Amy Catalano. On lap 22, Tommy Catalano would take the lead away from Vernon and Jimmy Zacharias would take over second from Vernon. While running in third, Vernon would spin exiting turn two, causing the caution to be displayed. Catalano would be able to out race Zacharias on the restart to pick up his first win of the season, and second career Pro Modified win on the highbanks.

Randy Culver and Scott Wylie were on the front row for the E-Mod feature event with Wylie taking over the lead. Culver applied the pressure to Wylie but Wylie; a third generation racer used his knowledge of the highbanks to stay in position number one in the 20 lap event. Wylie and Culver would open up their advantage with Culver taking over the lead on lap 12. Culver would open up the lead over Wylie, and Carter Mook. Culver would go on to pick up the victory over Wylie, Mook, Luke Rutsky and Dennis Hagg completed the top five.

Josh Hathaway and Eric Brown led the Seneca Niagara Casino Late Models to the green flag with Brown taking the lead. Bob Minacapelli hit the turn one wall hard. Minacapelli climbed out of his car under his own power. Hathaway, Brown, Brandon Glover and Bill Osborn put on a battle for the ages as the field went side by side for much of the feature distance. In the end, it was Hathaway earning his first career Late Model feature victory.

Tom Northem and Tony Bilotte led the competitive field of Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag for their 25 lap feature event with Northem jumping out into the early race lead. With Northem showing the way, Bilotte had issues in his machine and pulled into the infield. Tommy Wentland raced his way into second with defending divisional champion Rob Miszczak in third with Dave Vona and Dave Wilson racing inside the top five early on. Northem would quickly open up the lead as Dave Wilson would pass Vona and Miszczak to take over third. Wilson would continue to drive towards the front after passing Wentland to move into second place on lap eight. Northem and Wilson would battle side by side for several circuits with Wilson taking over the lead on lap 13. Dave Vona’s strong run in the top five all evening ended on lap 19 with smoke billowing out of the front end. After a late race caution for a Max Northem spin, Wilson would pull away from Tom Northem on the restart and then lost the handle on his ride, giving the lead to Northem with Miszczak in second with Wentland and Lexi Wilson racing inside the top four. Wilson would pass Wentland and Miszczak to take over second but it was Northem picking up the win. Wilson, Miszczak, Wentland and Jim Loffredo completing the top five. Rob Miszczak was disqualified in post-race technical inspection.

2014 track champion Jonathan Reid jumped out into the early lead over past divisional champion Shawn Nye in the early stages of the NYPA TQ Midgets feature event. Nye would take over lead after Reid came to a stop in turn three to bring out the caution. The restart would see Nye and Kyle Hutchinson pacing the field with Nye leading the field with Hutchinson and Dave Wollaber moving into third place. Owen Bednasz came to a stop on the front straightaway to bring out the caution once again on lap 10. Hutchinson would take over the lead on the restart with Wollaber applying the pressure to Shawn Nye for second. Off a lap 12 restart, Dave Wollaber would pass Nye and Hutchinson to take over the lead. Nye would apply the pressure to Wollaber as the lead trio pulled away from the rest of the field.  Wollaber would pull away to pick up his second win of the season.

Jeremy Haudricourt raced his way into the early lead over Carl Vilardo and Bryce Norton in the early stages of the 20 lap main event for the INEX Legends. Vilardo went underneath Haudricourt on lap five to take over the lead and at the same time Kevin Bertelone spinning in turn four to bring out the races first caution. The restart would see Haudricourt out race Vilardo to regain the lead. The caution would come out on lap eight as Mike Anderson and Donald Buell came together in turn four. Haudricourt would take off on the restart while Brandon DeBrakeleer and Jimmy Zacharias worked their way up through the field as DeBrakeleer would pass Bryce Norton to move into fourth place. Owen Bednasz looped his racer in turn two to bring out the caution on lap 13. Brandon DeBrakeleer continued to work his way through the field as he pass Matt Mead to move into third place while Haudricourt and Vilardo continued to battle for the lead. Haudricourt and Vilardo would settle the battle for the win between them with Haudricourt holding off Vilardo to pick up the win.

Travis Murphy and Qualifying event winner Nikki Maltby led the Future 4’s to the green flag for their main event with Maltby jumping into the lead with Allie Brainard racing her way into second. Maltby and Brainard both had issues but Maltby was able to continue on, losing positions while Brainard took her machine to the infield. Maltby was able to regain the lead away from Travis Murphy on lap six. Maltby was able to drive away to pick up her first career win.

Joe Mastrocicco led the field on the initial go around in the 12 lap main event for the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s with Jason Adams taking over the lead by the conclusion of the first lap. Adams and Mastrocicco would pull away from the field and in the end, Adams would continue his dominance over the division and picking up his second win of the season.

News and Notes: The Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex would like to congratulate 12 time Holland Champion Art Clark on getting inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. Clark dominated local auto racing for more than 50 seasons. He won a total of 19 track championships throughout WNY, and was a three-time Eastern Racing Circuit of the Americas Champion. Clark’s win total is over 300 on both dirt and asphalt. The induction ceremony will take place in the fall of 2015. The Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex is participating with Ingersoll Rand’s promotion involving the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Home Tracks. Ingersoll Rand is the official Power Tool of NASCAR and fans have the chance to win prizes from IR weekly by texting IRTOOLSHMC to 313131.

Next Saturday night will be round one of the “Wildest Show on Wheels” Crash-A-Rama. Tickets purchased at participating Carquest and Advance Auto Parts throughout Western New York will allow fans to enter the grandstands one hour earlier! A full night of destruction featuring the popular School Bus Figure 8 race, Compact Enduro 100, Flag Pole Race, Boat-Trailer Race, Front Wheel Drive Demolition Derby, Stock Roller Derby and the all new Stunt Wars will have fans sitting on the edge of their seats all night long. NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing will return on Saturday June 20 as the Bank of Holland presents the Annual Gold Rush and Kids Rides. It is also WNY Sportsmen Night presented by Kishels, fans that show their 2014 hunting license will receive $5 admission. A full show of Pro Modifieds, Late Models, Chargers, Hornets, Future 4’s, Figure 8’s, NYPA TQ Midgets, INEX Legends and the E-Mods will all be on the racing program. Pit Gates will open at 3:30 with Grandstand gates swinging open at 4:45 with qualifying events starting at 5:00pm with NASCAR feature racing at7:05pm.
