PATRICK EMERLING WINS THUNDER IN THE HILLS ROC MODIFIED 100; Northem, Maltby and Wollaber All Collect Checkers

PATRICK EMERLING WINS THUNDER IN THE HILLS ROC MODIFIED 100

HOLLAND, New York (July 9, 2016) – Orchard Park, NY’s Patrick Emerling was victorious in the Thunder in the Hills 100 for the Ferris Mowers Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series fueled by Sunoco at Holland International Speedway on Saturday evening. Tom Northem from Alden, NY scored his first Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Charger feature of the season. Michele Maltby from West Seneca, NY crossed the line first for her first career win in the Bank of Holland Hornets. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY scored his third NYPA TQ Midget feature win of the season.

“100 laps is a long way on one set of tires but we managed on when to use them and when to hold back” stated Emerling in victory lane. “I did everything I could” stated runner up finisher Jimmy Zacharias. “We’re getting closer and I hope that the win is coming” Zacharias added. “We had a different strategy tonight trying to make the bottom work and we used too much tire” stated third place finisher Andy Jankowiak.

Brian DeFebo and Mike Leaty shared the front row for the Thunder in the Hills 100 for the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series and it was Leaty showing the way at the end of lap one. Will Thomas spun in turn four to bring out the races first caution on lap three. Leaty would pull away off the restart with DeFebo, TJ Potrzebowski, Tyler Rypkema and Patrick Emerling running in the top five. Jimmy Zacharias worked his way into the top five by the races one-fifth mark. The caution would come out again as Calvin Carroll and Chris Risdale came together on the back stretch.

On the lap 27 restart, Brian DeFebo would regain the lead from Leaty with Jimmy Zacharias running in third. Zacharias would complete the pass on lap 29 to take over second and began chasing down DeFebo. Zacharias would go underneath DeFebo to take over the race lead just one lap later. Amy Catalano and Alan Bookmiller spun in turn two to bring out the caution on lap 41. Bookmiller’s night was done as he had major front end damage on his Lent Builders #40 entry.

Zacharias would continue his advantage over the field as Patrick Emerling and George Skora III worked their way into the top five. The caution would come out on lap 50 as Chuck Hossfeld came to a stop on the front straightaway. Zacharias, DeFebo, Leaty, Emerling and Skora raced in the top five off the mid-race restart. Patrick Emerling took over second after DeFebo got loose off turn four. Zacharias would start to stretch his lead but it would be erased as Jeff Hamman slowed on the front stretch. 

Andy Jankowiak worked his way from 18th on the grid to 3rd on lap 60. The lap 62 restart saw Jimmy Z and Emerling on the front row with Zacharias showing the way. Mike Leaty took third away from Jankowiak off the restart. Jankowiak would return the favor just three laps later and Skora would take fourth away from Leaty. The caution would come back out for debris on lap 75, erasing the lead that Zacharias and Emerling had over the field. Zacharais and Emerling would continue their battle on the restart as Jankowiak and Skora started to reel in the lead duo. Emerling would look underneath Jimmy Z and the duo would go side by side for several circuits and Emerling would take over the lead on lap 86.

A late race caution came out on lap 94 as Tommy Catalano came to a stop in turn two. Emerling would pull away off the restart but the caution would come back out on lap 96 as Amy Catalano slowed in turn three. Emerling would pull away on the restart and would go on to collect his fourth win on the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series in 2016. Jimmy Zacharias, Andy Jankowiak, George Skora and Mike Leaty completed the top five.

 

“I’d like to dedicate the win to the family of Ken Krawczyk” stated Northem in victory lane. “Krawczyk brought me into racing and this is for him and his family” Northem added. Tom Northem led from the pole in the main event for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Chargers. Rich Carnes raced in second with Nik Welshans, Tim Welshans and Josh Hathaway running in the top five. Mark Hoch moved into the top five prior to the cross flags as the Welshans brothers were running in second and third respectively. Mark Hoch passed Tim Welshans to take over third at the halfway point. Hoch would then go after Nik Welshans for second place on lap 20 and would complete the pass with 10 laps remaining. Tom Northem would be on cruise control, leading from green to checkered to score the win, his first of the season. Mark Hoch, Nik Welshans, Tim Welshans and Josh Hathaway would complete the top five.

“I am on Cloud nine right now”, said an elated Michele Maltby after winning her first career Hornet feature”. Phil Powell and Marty Hughes brought the Bank of Holland Hornets to the green flag for their feature event and it was Hughes showing the way. Michele Maltby looked underneath Mandie Orr to take over third. Maltby then went to the outside to get around Powel to take over second, with Orr running in third. Maltby would then take over the lead by going to the outside of Hughes. Jeff Szafraniec and Louis Carbone would start to work their way towards the front as both would enter the top six by the races one-third mark. Kathie Ricketson took over second and began chasing down Maltby for the lead by the halfway point. Ricketson would catch Maltby in lap traffic however was unable to complete the pass to take the lead. Maltby would hold off Ricketson to pick up her first career win. Carbone, Szafraniec and Donald Palmer would complete the top five.

Charlie DiRosa and Scott Gleed set the front row for the NYPA TQ Midgets main event and it was DiRosa showing the way early. Kyle Hutchinson moved quickly into second and Shawn Nye moved into third on lap two. Hutchinson and Nye would take over the top two spots by lap three and quickly pulled away from the balance of the field. Dave Wollaber moved into fifth on lap four and at the end of lap four, Wollaber moved into third place. Shawn Nye went underneath Hutchinson to take over the lead on lap six. Hutchinson would regain the lead prior to the halfway point as Nye had issues and pulled into the infield. Hutchinson and Wollaber pulled away from Erik Musto. Wollaber used lap traffic to take over the lead on lap 14. Wollaber would go on to score the win, his third victory of the season.

NEWS AND NOTES: Speedway management would like to extend their condolences to the family of Ken Krawczyk who passed away on June 24, 2016. Ken was a former Challenger and Charger competitor for several seasons. Krawczyk was the 1986 Challenger Champion. Mandie Orr and Kathie Ricketson scored their first career Bank of Holland Hornet Qualifying wins. My Kinda Country played classic Country and rock music in the midway throughout the night.

Next Saturday is the Coca-Cola Night at the Races featuring midseason championships for the NYPA TQ Midgets. The Getzoni Agency Pro Chargers will be running twin features as the Bank of Holland Hornets, M&M U-Pull It Figure 8’s, Rookie Fours and INEX Legends round out the racing card. Grandstand gates will open at 5:45 pm, qualifying gets underway at 6:00 pm with NASCAR feature racing scheduled to go green at 7:05 pm.
